The Manual for the National Criminalisation of Ecocide and Factsheet
The Manual for the National Criminalisation of Ecocide and accompanying factsheet have been developed to assist lawmakers in implementing the EU Environmental Crime Directive (ECD). The factsheet provides a clear overview of the key steps required for implementation. The Directive entered into force in May 2024 and must be implemented by Member States by May 2026.
Ecocide Law Advisory partnered with the Working Group on National Criminalization of Ecocide in the development of both the manual and the factsheet. The Working Group, chaired by former Dutch Member of Parliament Lammert van Raan, who introduced the ecocide bill in the Netherlands, brought together legal and policy expertise to support effective and comprehensive implementation of the Directive.
The Manual on the National Criminalisation of Ecocide, published in early 2025, addresses key challenges raised by the 2024 EU Environmental Crime Directive and offers practical guidance to support the effective criminalisation of serious environmental harm across the EU.
Ecocide Law Advisory remains available to support lawmakers throughout the implementation process and to provide expert guidance on all aspects related to the Directive.
