BBC Radio Scotland Interview Ecocide Bill

Our Executive Director Kate Mackintosh was honoured to assist Monica Lennon as a member of her expert advisory committee. She spoke to BBC Radio Scotland to explain the bill.

This is another big leap forward in the criminalisation of ecocide today, as Scottish Labour MP Monica Lennon published the Ecocide (Prevention) (Scotland) Bill,  a landmark step toward criminalizing severe environmental destruction.

The proposal was backed by 51 MSPs across five parties. If passed, Scotland would be the first UK nation to recognize ecocide as a criminal offence, defined as unlawful or wanton acts causing widespread or long-term harm to nature.

Scotland now joins countries like Brazil, Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, and Italy in advancing domestic ecocide laws, marking a milestone for environmental justice worldwide.

We are hopeful that more countries will follow in their example!
