Scotland votes to advance the Ecocide Bill

MSP Monica Lennon addresses the parliament before the vote.

We congratulate Monica Lennon, the Scottish Parliament, and the people of Scotland on the vote to advance the Ecocide (Scotland) Bill. This is a significant step towards recognising severe environmental destruction as a serious crime and future prevention of such crimes.

This vote marks an important moment for environmental justice and accountability. Scotland is demonstrating clear and principled leadership, both within Europe and globally.

Monica’s sustained and committed leadership on the ecocide bill reflects a rare combination of persistence, integrity, and political courage. She spoke at our international conference on Ecocide, Human Rights, and Environmental Justice, held in London in October last year, where her clarity of purpose, determination, and energy stood out as a compelling example of values-driven politics in action.

Our Executive Director, Kate Mackintosh, was part of Monica’s advisory team, and we are thrilled with this outcome.

Scotland’s decision strengthens the international movement to recognise ecocide as a crime, and we hope it will inspire other governments to take similarly decisive steps.
