Ellen
Meet So Jeong (Ellen) Park '26, a Double Bruin who gained valuable experience in international law as part of the UCLA Law in The Hague program through UCLA Law The Promise Institute Europe. Learn more about Ellen's journey below. ⬇️
What drew you to law school, and specifically to UCLA Law?
"I’m a double Bruin! I loved my undergrad experience at UCLA and for law school, I valued close relationships with professors, strength in various legal areas, and geographical proximity to a major city. Before I committed, my grandfather visited me in a dream and we were taking my law school graduation pictures in front of Royce Hall — it felt right!"
What made you decide to join the UCLA Law in The Hague program?
"I joined The Hague program because I believe, especially now, it’s important for us to stay engaged with the international legal community. International law can promote accountability and greater justice and, as legal scholars, we have a duty to learn from the wealth of history and information available to guide our future as a nation. I would absolutely recommend the program to other students. The prevailing advice in the field is to gain a few years of domestic experience, first. The Hague program is a unique opportunity to join before students even graduate, and to gain hands-on experience with the support of UCLA."
Tell us about your work and experience while in the UCLA Law in The Hague program. What did your work focus on?
"I worked at the Registry of an International Tribunal which was like being in-house counsel for the court. I drafted internal memos, court filings, and reports regarding court administration. I’ve gained valuable, practical experience in navigating the international legal system (research, jurisdiction, international treaties) and got to observe how special tribunals align with customary international law."
What is your favorite memory from your time working in The Hague?
"I have so many amazing memories that I’ll cherish from my time at The Hague! The UCLA trip to Geneva where we sat in on the UN’s Human Rights Council Session was so special. Another highlight is King’s Day in Amsterdam, great vibes, sunshine and celebration!"
