What made you decide to join the UCLA Law in the Hague program?
“I was drawn to the UCLA Law in The Hague program because it offered the rare opportunity to live abroad and to work directly within an international tribunal. During my time at UCLA Law, I became interested in international law, and I wanted to experience firsthand how international law operates in practice. This program gives students the opportunity to apply their knowledge while working with individuals from all around the world.”
Tell us about your work and experience while in the UCLA Law in the Hague program. What did your work focus on?
“I participated in a wide range of projects while working in the Registrar's Office at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers. The Registrar's Office handles all kinds of administrative tasks to ensure that the tribunal functions properly. This includes matters that occur before, during, and after trials. Much of the work that I did involved handling trial-related information, preparing documents for release to the public, and conducting legal research. About halfway through the externship, I was given a substantial project regarding a case that recently concluded. Over multiple weeks, I wrote several lengthy memos and compiled important documents on a specific topic which were then presented to the Registrar. It was rewarding to see the work that I had done being used for an important cause.”
What is your favorite memory from your time working in the Hague?
“My favorite memory from my time working in The Hague is going out to dinner with the other students! I've made great friends here and I always enjoyed meeting up with everyone for our classes. After each class, we would try different places around the Hague for dinner. It was so fun walking around the city and trying different cuisines, especially close to the holiday season, when all the lights and decorations are out!”
What would you say to other students who might be interested in this externship opportunity?
“UCLA Law in The Hague is a wonderful way to get hands-on work experience outside of the classroom in a beautiful setting. At the KSC, I was able to help resolve issues that were unfolding in real time and contributing to cases that have real importance. There is so much to learn from living abroad, and the Hague is the perfect place to study law! Even outside of your own placement, you'll get to learn so much about different areas of international law, various legal tribunals, and different legal organizations. This is a great opportunity to make a difference while learning so much and making meaningful connections.”
