Final Day in Geneva for UCLA Law in The Hague Students

The UCLA Law in The Hague Students and Prof. Mackintosh meet with UN Legal Advisor Sun Kim

On the last day of their visit to Geneva, the UCLA Law in The Hague students were able to sit in as states debated the reports of the working groups on arbitrary detention and enforced disappearances, before catching a briefing on efforts to protect children in armed conflict from Aurélie Lamazière of Save the Children International.

After lunch, they headed over to Palais Wilson to meet with UC alum Sun Kim, Legal Advisor at the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, to discuss Commissions of Inquiry (CoI). Sun explained how the office supports such investigations with methodologies, communications and legal advice. They were able to reflect on the report of the COI on the Occupied Palestinian Territory which had just been released, finding that genocide had been committed in the Gaza strip.

It was a packed three days, filled with serious topics and lighter moments. As they headed back to the Hague, the students were able to enjoy a last look at Geneva from the water with a sunny boat ride on the lake.
