UCLA Law in The Hague students trip to Geneva, day 2

On their second day in Geneva, the UCLA Law in The Hague students visited the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent Museum, where they met with Etienne Kuster, a lawyer with the ICRC, and discussed his current legal work, as well as his earlier experiences in Thailand and Pakistan.

Later, they attended sessions at the UN Human Rights Council on hazardous waste and enforced disappearances and spoke with Raphael Pangalangan from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Raphael’s work focuses on the human rights of the people of the Marshall Islands stemming from the State’s nuclear legacy.

They rounded off the day with Federica Donati of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, who gave an expert overview of the full range of UN Special procedures mandates.

So far, the students have had a rare opportunity to engage directly with practitioners at the forefront of international humanitarian and human rights law, deepening their understanding of both the challenges and the impact of these global efforts.
