Ecocide Law Bibliography Highlight
A new article has been published in our Special Edition of The International Journal of Human Rights on Ecocide, Human Rights and Environmental Justice!
Enam K. Antonio, Daniel Adjin Odonkor & Mordechai Kwaku Nyamekye’s article 𝘉𝘦𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘌𝘯𝘷𝘪𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘏𝘢𝘳𝘮: 𝘙𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘧𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘥𝘥𝘳𝘦𝘴𝘴 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘩 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘎𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘢’𝘴 𝘐𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘨𝘢𝘭 𝘔𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘴 argues that current definitions of ecocide inadequately address the environmental and socio-economic realities of the Global South. Using Ghana’s illegal gold mining (galamsey) crisis as a case study, the authors propose an expanded definition that includes harm to human livelihoods, health, and fundamental rights.
Drawing on existing studies and reports, the analysis shows how environmental destruction in resource-dependent economies cannot be separated from its human consequences. Using political ecology theory, the authors demonstrate how global market demand, local power dynamics, and weak governance enable large-scale environmental harm.
The article features in the Annotated Bibliography at EcocideLaw.com, where UCLA research assistants ensure the bibliography remains continuously updated with the latest scholarship.
Daniel Adjin Odonkor’s intervention in London was one of the highlights of our October conference, and this perspective cannot come too soon.
