What made you decide to join the UCLA Law in the Hague program?

I've always had a strong interest in working in international law, and when I first learned about the program I was struck by what a unique and exciting opportunity it is. The program offers the invaluable opportunity to work at institutions which not only exist in the field of international law, but shape it. Additionally, the accompanying class and trip offers not only the chance to meet a wide range of international law professionals and hear their stories, but also helps to contextualize your placement within the larger international legal framework.

Tell us about your work and experience while in the UCLA Law in the Hague program. What did your work focus on?

I worked in the Office of the Deputy-Registrar at the International Court of Justice. The robust and varied mandate of the Office offered the chance to work on a diverse range of projects, from the administration of the Court to collaboration on a variety of international and local organizations to helping facilitate hearings and events with national leaders. During my time at the Court I also had the opportunity to meet with leaders of departments and even Justices, all of which provided a wealth of advice and inspiration.

What is your favorite memory from your time working in the Hague?

It's hard to pick, but the class trip to Geneva was definitely a highlight! Being in Geneva and meeting different advocates and leaders helped elucidate the varied paths and opportunities in international law. It was also a powerful and bit of a surreal experience being at the UN Office and watching the sessions of the UN Human Rights Council, particularly after spending so much time reading the reports of special rapporteurs and the UNHRC in class. Fondue next to Lake Geneva was definitely a plus too!

What would you say to other students who might be interested in this externship opportunity?

The UCLA Law in the Hague program was everything I hoped it could be and more. During my time I met profoundly inspiring people, I had the opportunity to work on meaningful projects, and made some of my favorite law school memories. Being able to work in such significant and meaningful spaces while still being a law student is an incredibly unique opportunity that I would encourage everyone to take advantage of!
