"I chose to join UCLA Law in The Hague because I was eager to extern in the city of international law during such a dynamic and transformative time. During my placement with the International Development Law Organization (IDLO), I focused on customary informal justice programs, gender equality, and transitional justice in Latin America, all aimed at promoting the rule of law globally.
One of my favorite parts of the experience was building meaningful relationships with my colleagues outside of work, as well as traveling around the Netherlands and to new countries on weekends. My favorite trips included going to Cervino, Italy to snowboard at the Matterhorn and meeting my brother in Berlin during his spring break after the UCLA Law in The Hague Geneva trip.
I also enjoyed joining a new gym where I met many ‘Hagenees’ people (locals born in the city) and ‘Hagenaars’ (people who moved to the city). On my free time, I would try new cafes, my favorite being Pumpernickle, and new restaurants, my favorite being Waroeng Padang Lapek. When the weather got warmer, I enjoyed relaxing at Scheveningen beach.
I would strongly encourage students to apply for the externship and to arrive with an open mind since adapting to a new environment takes patience and self-forgiveness, but it ultimately leads to unforgettable experiences and lasting friendships. I look forward to bringing the writing and interpersonal skills I developed at IDLO back with me to Los Angeles."
